It’s October, and the spookiest day of the year, Halloween, is drawing near. It’s a day of wearing costumes, bobbing for apples, trick-or-treating, and other revelries, but at Al’s Florist & Gifts in Hollywood, Florida, we, of course, love to celebrate with Halloween s! Each October, our creative florists put together a variety of special designs featuring creepy creatures and other haunted embellishments to celebrate the spirit of Halloween.
Why We Celebrate Halloween
To many, Halloween seems like a crazy holiday. We dress up in costumes and go door to door. We light bonfires and make altars to honor and remember our dead. These strange traditions, however, have roots in the history of Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and the 3,000-year old Aztec celebration, Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
The Halloween we celebrate today goes back about 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival, Samhain. This celebration marked the end of the harvest, a day when the Celts believed the barrier between this world and the afterlife was broken. They’d light bonfires and wear costumes to scare off the ghosts.
In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III named November 1st All Saints Day, the day to celebrate saints and martyrs. Later, November 2nd was declared All Souls Day, a day to remember the dead. Soon, October 31st became known as All Hallow’s Eve, and later Halloween.
Today’s Halloween traditions aren’t too different from those of our ancestors. Although our candy’s wrapped, and we have scary movies to watch, it’s still a time meant for gathering with loved ones to celebrate life, the changing of the seasons, mark the end of harvest, and to honor our ancestors.
